Compare John 15:1.  The question why there is such a difference between the Thomist source and the Johannine usage perplexes students, but this is only one of many perplexing differences between East and West.  Although Johannine Christianity is closer to the eastern Way of Yesu it still is markedly different to the Synoptic tradition. Any religion planted away from the Spirit will be uprooted. If this is a reference to the Johannine sect it is remarkable that the two traditions knew about one another.  The  Way is however very different to Christianity in that according to John Yesu came into the world as the only-begotten Son of God, true God from true God...a view which The Way could never agree with.
