See also the doctrine of Illusion (maya) treated in the Gita.  As a machine operator in a very noisy factory, we can choose either to hear the overwhelming noise of all the motions and equipment and be numbed or taken in by it, or we can choose to focus our senses on a particular machine and become acutely aware of that - cutting out all the racket around us.  This we have to also do with our desires.
