While Duryodhana was busy going off on an ego tangent, flattering his peers and making himself believe that the multitude are ready to sacrifice their lives for his rather ignoble cause, the elder and mighty Bhisma knew that the flagrant and senseless babbling was  for no other reason than for Duryodhana to talk courage into himself – and he decided to assist the man in his need.
This mighty warrior knew he could let out a tremendously fearsome sound from his conch that would drive fear into any opponent’s heart.  This he did to empower Duryodhana, but the act was also the symbol of aggression, the declaration of war.  While the fearsome sound of the aggressor’s conch sounded Duryodhana drew courage from it – but they were not prepared for the return volley which the spirited and disciplined opposition could return.
