Duryondhana had been devious and never thought the Pandus would manage to get much of an army together.  Now, seeing the opposing line, and knowing they are worthy foes, he panics and runs to his guru for assistance.  His name means ‘difficult to do battle with’. Like king Saul, he too suffers mental defeat even before the fight.
