The concept of ‘we are what we eat’ is here introduced into the Book of Thomas.  In these two verses it is told that beings which feed off one another (eat other beings) are subject to change unto death.  Beings which feed off its eternal source, however, are not subject to this change which leads to death.  Only the spirit can feed off the Spirit. See also Saying 7.

CHANGE: The concept that change leads to death is modelled on the Platonic philosophy that God is the Unchangeable One, and we should endeavour to stop changing and return to that unchanging state of perfection.
