This is another instance where East and West seem to part.  To imitate Christ is to become like Him, to become Christ by walking in the footsteps and drinking from the spirit of Christ.  In the West however, as illustrated in Mark 13:9-13, the imitation of Christ is to share in the same martyr death.  To this effect the West places great emphasis on certain Christological concepts which in the East is not important at all – the doctrines of the Suffering Servant, the Messiah, the crucifixion and the resurrection and the suffering Lamb and sacrificed Son of Man..
